Simeon: The Waiting Saint

Scripture Reading: Luke 2:25–35

Reflection

Christmas is one of the hardest times to be patient. Kids are counting down the days until they get to open their gifts. Parents are counting the lists of parties, gifts, and cards. It seems everyone is waiting for something. But waiting isn’t just a Christmas thing—waiting is a life thing. And sometimes waiting can make us feel worried, frustrated, or even doubtful.

Let us turn to the story of Simeon in Luke 2. It’s a story about someone who waited a long time—an entire lifetime even—yet didn’t let impatience turn into doubt.

Simeon loved God and trusted Him with his whole heart. And one day, God made Simeon an amazing promise:
He would not die before he saw the Savior, Jesus—the Messiah God had promised for thousands of years.

Can you imagine waking up each morning wondering, “Will today be the day?” But days turned into months, and months turned into years, and still nothing. This is the kind of waiting where most of us start to feel impatient. We might wonder, “Did God forget?” “Is He listening?” “Is His promise even real?” But Simeon didn’t let impatience turn into doubt.
He kept trusting God, even though he didn’t know when the promise would come true.

Then one day, the Holy Spirit led Simeon to the temple. And there he saw a young couple, Mary and Joseph, holding a tiny baby boy—Jesus. The Holy Spirit had moved Simeon to be there that day, and suddenly all the waiting made sense.

Simeon took Jesus in his arms and knew:
“God kept His promise.”

All those years of waiting—all the moments when it might have been hard, all the times impatience could have turned into doubt—had now led to an answered prayer, the fulfillment of a promise. God came through, just as He always has and always will.

Simeon wasn’t patient because the wait was easy. He was patient because he trusted that God is good, God is faithful, and God always keeps His promises.

Brothers and sisters, we are called to do the same. When we wait for something hard, when things take longer than we want, when we pray and don’t see answers quickly, we can choose to let our faith in Jesus be our guide. We can wait with HOPE instead of worry.

This Advent, we’re not just counting days until Christmas—
we’re learning to trust Jesus in the waiting, just like Simeon.
