John the Baptist: The Forerunner

Scripture Reading: Luke 1:39–45

Reflection

Even before his birth, John the Baptist was fulfilling his calling. When Mary arrived at Elizabeth’s home, carrying the Messiah in her womb, the unborn John leaped with joy. This tiny prophet, still months from being born, recognized the presence of his Savior.

Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, proclaimed what her baby already knew: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!” The forerunner’s first act of ministry wasn’t a sermon preached in the wilderness or a baptism in the Jordan—it was a leap of pure recognition and joy at Christ’s presence.

John’s entire life would be marked by this singular purpose: preparing hearts to receive Jesus. He would later declare, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). His joy wasn’t in his own ministry but in pointing others to Christ. John teaches us that recognizing Jesus isn’t just an intellectual exercise—it’s a response of our whole being that moves us to prepare room for Him.

This Advent season, we’re called to be forerunners in our own communities. How can we prepare the way for Christ in our homes, workplaces, and spheres of influence? Like John, our greatest joy should come from recognizing Christ’s presence and helping others encounter Him too.

Reflection Questions

  1. When have you experienced a “leap of joy” moment in recognizing God’s presence or work in your life?
  1. What areas of your heart need preparing to receive Christ more fully this Christmas?
  1. Who in your life needs someone to “prepare the way” for them to encounter Jesus? How might God be calling you to be that forerunner?

Application

  • Today: Spend a few minutes in silence, simply recognizing Christ’s presence.
  • This Week: Identify someone struggling this season and encourage them with Christ’s hope.
  • This Season: Practice “decreasing” so Christ can increase—choose one area to shift focus away from self and toward Jesus.

Additional Scripture for Deeper Study

  • Isaiah 40:3–5
  • Malachi 3:1
  • John 1:19–34
  • Matthew 3:1–12
  • John 3:25–30

Family Activity

Cut out paper footprints and write on each one a way your family can prepare their hearts for Jesus (praying, sharing, helping, kindness). Lay the footprints in a path leading toward your nativity scene. Each day, choose one footprint to “walk out” together.
