It is Finished

HIGHLIGHT

John 19:28–30

“When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. — John 19:30”

EXPLAIN

Good Friday defies easy writing. The cross is the axis of all human history, and the temptation is to either domesticate it with familiar words or to be so overwhelmed that we say nothing real. Try not to do either. Jesus was betrayed, abandoned, falsely tried, mocked, flogged, forced to carry His own cross, nailed to wood, and left to die in public humiliation. And in the middle of it all, He prayed for those killing Him. He kept loving. The Greek word translated ‘It is finished’ is tetelestai, a word used in commerce meaning ‘paid in full.’ This was not a cry of defeat. It was a declaration of completion. The debt was canceled. The separation was ended. The veil tore from top to bottom, and access was opened. Good Friday is called Good not despite the cross, but because of what the cross accomplished.

APPLY

The cross answers the question your sin keeps asking: How can I ever be enough? The answer is that you were never supposed to be. Jesus was enough. ‘It is finished’ means you don’t have to earn what has already been paid for. Today is not a day for self-improvement, but a day for grief, gratitude, and the quiet receiving of what Christ alone could give.

RESPOND

  • Read the seven last words of Christ slowly. Which one arrests you most and why?
  • Jesus cried ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ What does it mean that He experienced abandonment so that we never would?
  • Tetelestai…’It is finished.’ What in your life are you still trying to finish on your own that Jesus has already completed?
  • How does sitting at the foot of the cross and not rushing to Easter change how you receive the resurrection?

REFLECTION & PRAYER
Begin this time by sitting quietly for two minutes. After sitting quietly, do the following:

  • Do not rush to Easter today. Sit with the weight of Good Friday. Allow grief and gratitude to coexist.
  • Pray through tetelestai (‘It is finished.’) What have you been trying to finish on your own? Release it.
  • Thank God, slowly and specifically, for what the cross accomplished: forgiveness, access, reconciliation, freedom.
  • Finish your time by praying, “Jesus, I do not want to rush past Friday to get to Sunday. Today I sit at the foot of the cross. I am undone by what You did for me. Thank You. It is enough. You are enough. Amen.”
