Baby Jesus: Emmanuel

Baby Jesus: Emmanuel

Scripture Reading: Matthew 1:23; Isaiah 7:14

Reflection

As followers of Christ, we know that God is with us! We are reminded of that promise in Isaiah 7:14 and Matthew 1:23. The name Immanuel means “God with us.” It’s a promise that fills the pages of Scripture and every season of our lives. When Isaiah first spoke these words, God’s people were facing fear and uncertainty. Threats surrounded them, and faith was faltering. Yet into that fear, God gave a promise—not just of deliverance, but of His very presence.

God’s presence. Just pause for a moment and think about His presence today. Don’t you love that promise? Aren’t you thankful for His presence?

During this time of year, God’s presence is especially felt as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. We sense that presence all around us—the decorations, the music, the colors, the temperatures (kind of!), and the gifts. And God’s presence is the best present of all this Christmas season. I know it is easy to say that, but not always easy to experience it or to help others experience that gift. Yet the reality remains—“God with us” is Christmas!

Speaking of presents… I have experienced many Christmases. They hold special memories, and I know each Christmas holds wonderful memories for you as well. But the more Christmases I experience, the more I am reminded of the many gifts I have received. Many of them have been incredibly memorable, and I am grateful for each one. But every year, it seems I want or need something new that feels special—and again, I’m thankful to receive those things. But God’s gift of His Son, Jesus, is with us all the time. It’s a gift we can experience daily as we love Him and spend time with Him. I am so thankful that God is with us.

How will you experience God’s presence this year? How will that make a difference in your life? How will it make a difference in the lives of your family, your friends, and even the strangers you meet? I pray that as you experience God’s presence this Christmas season, you will encounter Him in such a way that it makes a profound difference in your life for the rest of this year and into the coming year. His presence is such a gift to you, and it is my prayer that you experience that gift this Christmas season like never before.
